Hearing loss

Types of hearing impairment

Types of hearing impairment

There are different types of hearing impairment. These are:

  • Conductive hearing loss
  • Sensori-neural hearing loss
  • Mixed hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss

This means there are problems that prevent sound being “conducted” (travelling) to the cochlea. It leads to a loss of loudness and is like listening to someone speaking very softly or from a distance.

Sensori-neural hearing loss

This means there are problems with the inner ear. The difficulties can range from mild to total loss of hearing. It reduces loudness and clarity, with sound being distorted.

Mixed hearing loss

This is a combination of both sensori-neural and conductive hearing loss.
